common questions
Therapy is an opportunity to discuss/talk about issues that are important to the client, while having a trained objective person (Therapist) help work through not only the current situation but in dealing with similar situations in the future. Therapy can be about one specific problem, or it can be about multiple. Something to mention, is that therapy is a collaborative event, it requires an active role from both the client at the therapist for change to occur.
Seeking mental health counseling isn’t just for those suffering from severe mental Illnesses, but for anyone going through hardships and life transition. Whether you have stress in your life, problems with a relationship, or anything else that weighs on your mind, you can benefit from therapy.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Getting help with your mental health concerns is not a weakness. Reaching out in the first place takes a lot of strength and willpower on your part. It is natural when seeking help for mental health issues to worry about what others may think of you.
People seeking therapy need to feel safe and comfortable talking about their lives and feelings without worrying information will be shared with others. Mental health professionals understand this and highly value the need for client confidentiality. In fact, they are bound to adhere to it by a code of ethics.

Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes. Clients typically meet on a weekly or biweekly basis depending on the client’s needs.
Life is full of surprises and unforeseen changes that can cause us emotional pain beyond our control. Working with a professional counselor can improve our ability to regain balance, receive un-bias input, and gain new perspective to overcome your challenges.
Typically, counseling starts with the weekly meetings until your therapist get to know you and formulate solid therapy goals together. We usually tell my clients, “this is your therapy and you get to choose how often we should meet”. If a client is in crisis, then we suggest meeting weekly until things become stable. Once the crisis is resolved, we move to bi-weekly or even once a month. Therapy is not forever and we all need moments of help and reflection.
In the initial session the main focus of the therapy is building trust, safety, and helping your therapist with some basic information about what brings you to therapy. This process will help the therapist come up with a collaborative therapy goal for future sessions. The following sessions will start with the client sharing about what has been happening since the last session and issues needing further discussion. We typically start the session by asking my clients if there is anything they would like to talk about. How are they doing with their therapy goals?
