Premarital Counseling
in Wheaton, IL

You are planning a wedding, but the marriage is the part that lasts. Most couples spend months on the venue and the guest list and almost no time on the conversations that actually shape a life together: how you handle money, how you fight and make up, what you each quietly expect from the other. Premarital counseling gives you that space now, while things feel good, so you are building on something solid instead of hoping it holds. You do not have to figure it out as you go.

What We Talk About

Conversations Worth Having Now

Premarital counseling is not about finding problems. It is about getting clear on the things couples tend to assume they already agree on. These are the topics we make room for, before life gets busy.

We follow what is most alive for the two of you rather than a fixed script. Our therapists in Wheaton, IL work with couples across DuPage County, including Naperville, Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Downers Grove, and Carol Stream, as well as online throughout Illinois.

A Space for Both of You

Preparation, Not a Test

Premarital counseling is not an exam you can fail. There are no wrong answers and no one is grading your relationship. It is structured time with a therapist who helps you talk about the things that are easy to keep putting off, in a room where both of you actually get heard.

We meet you in person in Wheaton or online across Illinois, whichever fits two busy schedules and a wedding to plan. Some couples come for a handful of focused sessions, others stay a little longer. The right fit matters, so we start by making sure the pace and the therapist feel right for both of you.

Our Approach

Methods Built for Couples

We do not wing it. We pair a structured assessment with proven relationship methods so your sessions focus on what matters most to the two of you.

PREPARE/ENRICH Assessment

A research-based questionnaire you both take early on. It maps your strengths and the areas worth a closer look, so we are not guessing where to start.

Gottman Method

Built on decades of research with real couples. We draw on it for communication, managing conflict, and building friendship and trust.

Emotionally Focused Therapy

Helps you understand the emotions underneath the surface argument, so you respond to each other instead of reacting. See how EFT works.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Practical and forward looking. We build on what already works between you and set clear, doable goals for the months ahead.

Different couples need different things. We start with where you are, not a script.

What This Makes Possible

What If You Started Ready?

Premarital counseling will not make marriage easy, nothing does. What it can do is send you into it with fewer blind spots and a shared way of handling the hard parts. Couples we work with leave with:

  • A shared language for money before the first joint account
  • A way to disagree that does not leave someone feeling unheard
  • Clear expectations about roles, family, and what you each want
  • Confidence that you can repair after a hard conversation
  • Fewer surprises in the first year of marriage
  • A stronger sense that you are walking into this as a team

It is not about being a perfect match. It is about knowing how to be on the same side.

Common Questions

Questions About Premarital Counseling

If your question isn't listed here, we're happy to talk it through during a free 15-minute consultation.

It is short-term, structured counseling for couples getting ready to marry. Instead of waiting for a problem, you sit down with a therapist and talk through the topics that shape a marriage: communication, money, conflict, expectations, family. Think of it as a head start, not a repair.

Strong is exactly the right time. Premarital counseling is most useful when nothing is wrong, because you can talk openly without the pressure of a crisis. Most couples are surprised by at least one topic they had quietly been avoiding. There is research on why waiting too long makes the work harder.

It varies. Many couples do a focused set of about four to eight sessions, often built around a premarital assessment. Others continue longer if a topic deserves more time. We will talk about a plan that fits your timeline and your wedding date in the first session.

The big ones: how you communicate, money and finances, handling conflict, intimacy, expectations and roles, and family or cultural differences. We follow what is most alive for you rather than running down a generic checklist.

Often, yes. A research-based assessment like PREPARE/ENRICH gives us a clear picture of your strengths and the spots worth exploring, so sessions are focused instead of open-ended. You both complete it early on and we review the results together.

It does not have to be. Our premarital counseling works for couples of any faith or none. If faith is central to your relationship and you want it woven in, we also offer Christian counseling. The choice is yours.

Yes. We offer online therapy across Illinois, which a lot of engaged couples prefer when they are juggling work, wedding planning, and two schedules. You can also mix in-person visits in Wheaton with telehealth depending on the week.

The initial session is $175 and follow-up sessions are $150. Insurance often does not cover premarital counseling since it is not treating a diagnosis, but we are glad to help you check. You can see current details on our fees and insurance page.

Couples therapy usually addresses a current struggle, and we answer more about it in our couples therapy FAQ. Premarital counseling is preventive: you are building skills and clarity before marriage rather than working through a problem. Same care and many of the same tools, different starting point.
