Adult therapy in Wheaton, IL at Panahi Counseling
What we treat

Find your starting point

Adults come to us for many different reasons. Our therapists bring focused experience to each of these areas, so the care you get is shaped around what you're actually dealing with.

Anxiety

Therapy helps with anxiety and panic, so stress stops deciding what your days look like.

Depression

Depression is one of the most treatable conditions, yet many people carry it silently. Therapy is a place to set it down and start working through it.

Life transitions

When change leaves you overwhelmed or burnt out, counseling is a place to sort through your options and find your footing.

Trauma & PTSD

Trauma can keep shaping how you feel long after the event. Our therapists use evidence-based methods, including EMDR, to help you work through it.

Self-esteem

Some experiences leave scars that affect how we see ourselves. Therapy can help you heal from those wounds and see yourself as you really are.

Postpartum support

The months around birth can bring anxiety, low mood, body image worries, and fears that are hard to say out loud. Therapy is a place to work through them.

Grief & loss

Grief is a natural response to loss. Counseling gives you room to carry it, and to find your footing in what comes next.

Codependency

If you keep setting aside your own needs to keep everyone else okay, therapy can help you find your balance again.

EMDR therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing helps the brain process stuck memories, so trauma, flashbacks, and intense emotions lose some of their grip.

Attachment-based therapy

Explore how early relationships shape your present connections. Attachment therapy helps you build healthier, more secure bonds in your life.

Chronic pain counseling

Living with chronic pain affects your mental health too. Therapy can help you develop coping strategies and improve your quality of life alongside treatment.

We work with adults from Wheaton, Winfield, Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream, West Chicago, Warrenville, Lombard, Glendale Heights, and Naperville, and from communities across DuPage and Kane County, with online therapy available throughout Illinois.

Common questions

Questions about adult therapy

If your question isn't here, we're happy to talk it through during a free 15-minute intake call.

What is adult therapy, and how is it different from counseling?

They're the same thing in practice, and most people use the words interchangeably. Adult therapy is regular, private conversation with a licensed therapist about what's actually happening in your life. Some people come in with something specific, like anxiety, a loss, or a relationship that keeps hitting the same wall. Others come in because something feels off and they can't quite name it. Both are reasonable places to start. Together you'll look at what's going on, where it came from, and what you want to be different, and your therapist will bring real tools to that work rather than only listening.

How do I know if I need therapy?

There's no amount of struggling you have to reach first. A more useful question is whether something has been taking up more room than you want it to: your sleep, your mood, your focus at work, your patience with people you love. If you've been managing around something for a while and it isn't getting smaller, that's reason enough to talk to someone. You also don't need to be in crisis. Plenty of adults come in looking steady from the outside and feeling tired underneath.

How much does therapy cost, and what insurance do you accept?

We are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Aetna PPO, and Cigna PPO. UnitedHealthcare coverage varies by clinician, so whether you can use it depends on who you work with. Our intake team will verify your benefits before your first session and let you know which therapists are in network for your plan, so you know what to expect rather than finding out afterward. What you pay with insurance depends on your plan's deductible and copay. If you'd rather not involve insurance, you can use an HSA card or pay out of pocket. Current session rates are listed on our Fees & Insurance page.

How do I get matched with the right therapist?

Fit between you and your therapist matters more than almost anything else in how therapy goes, so we take the match seriously. When you book a free 15-minute intake call, you'll talk with Laura, our Client Care Coordinator, about what you're working on, what you're hoping for in a therapist, what your schedule allows, and what insurance you carry. She matches you with the therapist on our team who fits.

What happens in the first session?

Mostly listening. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what's been hardest lately, and what you're hoping changes. You'll talk about your history only as much as is useful that day, and you can say when something feels like too much too soon. There's some paperwork at the start, including the confidentiality agreement. Sessions are 50 minutes, and by the end of that first one you should have a sense of how this therapist works and whether you want to keep going. You're allowed to decide it isn't the right fit.

Do I need a diagnosis or a referral to start?

No. You can contact us directly, without a referral from your doctor and without an existing diagnosis. Many people start with nothing more specific than a description of what's been hard. If you're using insurance, your plan may require a diagnosis for billing, and your therapist will talk that through with you openly rather than deciding it quietly on your behalf.

How often will I come, and how long does therapy last?

Most adults start weekly, which helps the work build momentum, and move to every other week as things steady out. How long it lasts depends on what you're working on. Focused concerns often take a shorter course, and patterns that have been in place for years usually take longer, because there's more to understand. Your therapist will check in with you regularly about how it's going, so you always know where you are in the work. Therapy lasts as long as it's useful to you.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. What you talk about in session stays between you and your therapist, and it's protected by law. There are a few narrow legal exceptions, mainly around immediate danger to you or someone else and the abuse of a child or a vulnerable adult. Your therapist will go over those exceptions with you at the start, so nothing about it comes as a surprise later.

Do you offer sessions in person in Wheaton?

Yes. Our office is located near the southeast corner of Manchester Road and County Farm Road, at 128 S County Farm Road, Suite C, Wheaton, a few minutes from Downtown Wheaton, Cantigny Park, and the DuPage County Complex. You'll find quiet, private therapy rooms and a calm waiting area. Parking is on site, so you can come and go without much fuss.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. We offer secure online sessions to anyone located in Illinois, which means you can meet with your therapist from home, from your office, or anywhere private enough to talk. Hybrid works too. Many adults do a mix of in-person and online depending on what the week looks like, and switching between them doesn't mean starting over with someone new.
