Couples therapy in Wheaton, IL at Panahi Counseling
A space for both of you

Therapy that holds both sides

Coming to couples therapy can feel vulnerable. You're letting someone into the parts of your relationship that you usually keep private. We get that, and we take it seriously.

Your therapist won't take sides or assign blame. The work is about understanding the patterns between you, not picking a winner. Whether you join us in person in Wheaton or connect online from anywhere in Illinois, you'll find a steady, neutral space where both of you can be heard.

Many couples come in barely speaking. Over time, partners start actually listening to each other again. It doesn't fix everything overnight, but it opens a way forward.
Recognize the pattern

Does any of this sound like the two of you?

Most couples who come in are not in crisis. More often it is the same argument, resurfacing in different forms, and a growing distance neither of you wanted.

  • The same conversation keeps spiraling, and you end up further apart than when it started
  • One of you shuts down, the other pushes harder
  • Trust has been shaken, and you're not sure what healing looks like
  • The closeness has faded, and you don't know how to talk about it
  • It's the same fight in different clothes, and neither of you can interrupt it
  • Something changed, a baby, a move, a job, and you're navigating it differently

These are patterns couples therapy works with directly, and you don't need to be in crisis to start.

Our approach

How we work with couples

Every couple is different, so we don't use one method for everyone. Your therapist will draw from approaches that match where you are and what you're working on, building a path that fits your relationship.

Gottman Method

Build friendship, manage conflict, and create shared meaning using research-backed tools from decades of work with real couples.

Emotion-focused therapy

Get underneath the surface arguments to the emotions driving them, so you can break out of the cycles that keep pulling you apart.

Imago relationship therapy

Understand how childhood experiences shape adult relationships, and learn to talk in ways that actually help your partner feel heard.

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Notice the unhelpful thoughts and old assumptions each of you brings into the relationship, and learn to respond to what is actually happening.

Attachment-based therapy

Understand each of your attachment styles and how they show up between you, especially when things get tense.

Solution-focused therapy

Focus on specific situations you are facing now and work together toward practical next steps you can both agree on.

No one gets blamed. Both of you get heard. Real change happens at your pace.

Couple working together and reconnecting after couples therapy
Life on the other side

What if you could feel like a team again?

Imagine coming home and feeling glad to see each other. Disagreements that get worked through instead of buried. Conversations that end with you feeling closer, not further apart. Every couple moves at its own pace, and progress is rarely a straight line, but this is the direction the work moves. Couples therapy can help you:

  • Communicate without it turning into a fight
  • Rebuild trust and emotional safety
  • Bring back closeness, both emotional and physical
  • Move through conflict without doing damage
  • Choose your relationship on purpose, every day

It's not about going back to how things used to be. It's about building something stronger.

Common questions

Questions about couples therapy

If your question isn't listed here, we're happy to talk it through during a free 15-minute intake call.

What does couples therapy look like at Panahi Counseling?

We start by getting to know both of you, the story of your relationship, what's been going well, and what's brought you in. From there, your therapist will draw from approaches like the Gottman Method, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and Imago Relationship Therapy to fit your situation. Sessions are collaborative and neutral. We don't take sides.

How do we know if we need couples therapy?

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from couples therapy. If you're having the same arguments on repeat, feeling more disconnected than close, dealing with broken trust, or just want to strengthen the relationship before things get harder, therapy can help. Many couples come in because something feels off, even if they can't quite name it.

What if my partner doesn't want to come to therapy?

This is common. Sometimes one partner is ready before the other. Individual therapy focused on the relationship can still be helpful, and we often see the more hesitant partner come around once they see things start to shift. We're happy to talk through your specific situation during a free intake call.

How long does couples therapy take?

It depends on what you're working on. Some couples come in for a focused stretch of 8 to 12 sessions to address a specific issue. Others stay longer to work through deeper patterns or rebuild after a betrayal. Most couples start with weekly sessions and move to biweekly as things stabilize. We check in regularly to make sure the work is moving in the right direction.

Will the therapist take sides?

No. A good couples therapist holds space for both of you and stays neutral. The work isn't about figuring out who's right and who's wrong. It's about understanding the patterns between you and giving you better tools to work with. Both partners should feel heard and respected in the room.

Can couples therapy help after an affair?

Yes. Affair recovery is one of the most common reasons couples come to therapy, and many couples do rebuild after infidelity. The process takes time and isn't easy, but with a structured approach, couples can move from crisis to clarity, and some find their way to a stronger relationship than before. Whether you stay together or not is something you'll figure out as you go.

What's the difference between couples therapy and premarital counseling?

Couples therapy usually addresses current issues, patterns, or breakdowns. Premarital counseling is more proactive. It helps you prepare for marriage by exploring expectations, communication styles, finances, family of origin, and other topics that tend to surface later. Both are valuable.

Can we do couples therapy online?

Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant online couples therapy to partners located in Illinois. Many couples prefer online sessions for the flexibility, especially when schedules are tight or one partner travels for work. You can attend together from the same room or from two different locations if that's easier.

What health insurance are you accepting?

We are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Aetna PPO, and Cigna PPO. UnitedHealthcare coverage varies by clinician, so whether you can use it depends on who you work with. Our intake team will verify your benefits before your first session and let you know which therapists are in network for your plan. One thing worth knowing for couples specifically: many plans require a mental health diagnosis for one partner in order to cover couples sessions, which isn't always a fit. Our intake team will walk you through how that works for your plan, and you can also use an HSA card or pay out of pocket. Visit our Fees & Insurance page for details.

We've tried couples therapy before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?

Fit matters a lot in couples work, maybe more than in any other kind of therapy. The right therapist with the right approach for your situation can make the work feel very different. We check in regularly to make sure the work feels productive for both of you, and if something isn't landing, we adjust. We also use evidence-based methods like Gottman and EFT that have decades of research behind them.
