A Note From Spencer

Feeling stuck and ready for something to change?

If you have been feeling stuck and you are not even sure how you got here, you are not alone. Maybe the words that keep coming up are purposeless, hopeless, exhausted, at your wits' end. You want something to change, even if you have no idea where to start.

That readiness is really all you need to begin. A lot of the people I work with come in without a clear map. They just know they are ready to stop staying where they are, and we figure out the rest together.

I work with adults, couples, and teens, usually 14 and up and sometimes a bit younger. What brings people in covers a lot of ground: anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, the big questions about meaning and purpose, and the relationship struggles that leave one partner feeling deeply hurt and both of you unsure how to feel close again.

When we work together, we start by naming what you believe is holding you back from a happier life, then look for a way forward that fits who you are. Our sessions are open and exploratory. I will invite you to tell your story more than once, and each time we go a little deeper, until something clicks and we can start living it out.

I draw on a few things depending on what you need. I follow your lead and keep judgment out of the room, so you can be honest about what actually matters to you. When it helps, we look at practical ways to shift the thoughts and habits that keep you stuck. I also pay close attention to your closest relationships and what you need from them. And for pain that runs deep, EMDR can help loosen the old beliefs you carry about yourself.

Here is what I believe: the change you want is already within you. It will take real work, and I am glad to help you figure out how to carry it. What matters most is the relationship we build. When that is strong and you have decided you are ready, things really can get better.

I know opening up to someone you have just met is not easy, even if you have been to therapy before. There is no rush and no pressure. We will go at your pace.

Outside of work, the people I love come first. You will also find me happily lost in the arts, a good movie, music, or a book.

I see clients in person here in Wheaton, and across Illinois by telehealth. If you would like to work together, there is just one small step: a free 15-minute call with our care coordinator to hear about my availability and book your first session.

Areas Of Focus

What I help with

I work with adults, couples, and teens (usually 14 and up) across a range of concerns. Each area links to more on how that support works.

Other things people bring to me: faith and religious struggles, LGBTQ+ support, anger, questions of meaning and identity, life transitions, and boundaries in relationships. Serving Wheaton, Naperville, Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Downers Grove, and Carol Stream.

Good To Know

Questions, answered

Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. I see clients in person at our Wheaton office and online across Illinois, so we can meet in whatever way fits your life best.
What ages do you work with?
I work with adults, couples, and teens, usually 14 and up and sometimes a bit younger. If you are not sure whether I am the right fit, our care coordinator can help match you with the right therapist on our team.
What happens in a first session?
Mostly we just get to know each other. I listen to what brought you in, answer your questions, and we start naming what is holding you back and what you want to work toward, at a pace that feels comfortable.
Do you take my insurance?
Our practice is in network with several major plans. The quickest way to check your coverage is a free 15-minute call, or take a look at our insurance and fees page.
What happens if we are not a good fit?
That happens sometimes, and it is completely okay. If we are not the right match, we will work it out together and help you find another therapist, whether that is someone here at the practice or outside it. What matters most is that you get the right support.
Do I need to take medication to be in therapy?
No. You do not need medication to work with me. If it ever seems like it could help, that is a collaborative decision, and ultimately it is your decision.
